BIOGRAPHICAL ESSAY

You will write a 5-6 paragraph essay about a historical figure.  You may pick any non-American born between 1500 and 1950.  I have provided a list of choices below.

The objective of this essay is to analyze what is the importance of the person you have chosen in history.  You may write about how they changed the course of history for good or evil.  The man or woman you write about may exemplify a period or movement in history.  They might have affected the lives of ordinary people or participated in the “great” events of history.  You must tell me why the historical figure is important.

The first paragraph will be an introduction beginning with a general statement or “hook.”  Then, the intro. Will summarize the argument you are making for the importance of your historical figure.  You will conclude the intro. With the statement of your thesis that will be that the figure you have chosen is important in history.

Your second paragraph will be a lengthy summary of the life of the person you have selected.  You should pay special attention to the crucial influences, turning points, obstacles, and accomplishments of their life.

The next 2-3 paragraphs will provide your arguments for the importance of your historical figure.  This is the most important part of your essay.

Finally, your concluding paragraph will repeat your thesis, repeat the summary of your arguments and conclude with a general statement.

This is a formal essay; so avoid 1st person (I, me, my, mine, in my opinion, etc.)  It must be typed and include a bibliography of at least 3 sources.  It must include a picture, map, timeline, or other graphic interpretation of the life of your historical figure.  This assignment is worth 200 points, due March 7.
