Lesson Plan on Job Interview

Objective: Organize an interactive lesson where students are given basic information on a job interview, how to prepare for the interview, how to practice the interview and how to do the interview.

I. Students need to focus on 2 key points:

A. There is an actor living in all of us and this actor wants a license to perform. Some of more inclined to do this than others, but we can all participate.

B. This activity will serve you well as a learned life skill. Everyone sooner or later will do some type of interview, whether for a job, or to get a bank loan, to permission to attend a community college or university and many other instances.

II. Teacher will organize the students into groups of 5.

The project will be:
  • The group will research the Internet or any other resource and decide on a job that the group would like to try to land.
  • Of course, the teacher will have the full power to approve choices made the groups.
  • Working at fast-food place is rejected however getting the job as the regional service manager for McDonald Hamburgers might be a good choice.
  • Applying for the job as a photographer for Wild West Surf Magazine might also be another good choice.
  • The job choice has to be challenging, one that will require research and planning and discussion to get the fullest grasp of the what the job involves, what qualifications, what tasks and responsibilities, what salary such a position gets, how much experience do you need, earning, etc.

III. Action Plan - The lead student, chosen by Mr. Berger, will be the person who interviews the prospective employees.

IV. Preparations for the Interview:

  • Students will research the Internet and other resources and bring to their GROUP and it can be shared with the whole class the different preparations for the Interview:
  • What type of questions might the interviewer ask? Engage discussion in class on these questions in general.
  • What should I wear on the day of the Interview? Teacher can provide web sites on Professional Dress, there are now many on the WEB. Teacher can provide hand outs on the type of questions that might be asked and basic guidelines on Professional Dress. Engage discussion in class on this issue.
  • The Day of the Job Interview: the group is mandated to create in minimal terms the stage setting where the interviews will take place in front of the class. This does not have to be elaborate, but just enough to get a sense of the office setup or environment where interview will take place.
  • Example: One group could choose to interview for the job of head photographer for a surf magazine in Hermosa beach. The students might bring in several props for the interview: a surf board and several posters from a surf shop. The students could decorate the stage area and set up a lamp, tables, and non-working cameras. They could decorate the interview area.
  • All the students practice their roles. The teacher practices the student who has the role of the Interviewer, reinforce that role.
  • All the prospective employees practice with each and alone.
  • On the day of the Interview, one student does the interview in front of the class while the other job applicants stay outside the class room and are escorted in one by one by another role player. This person is the receptionist or office staff person who introduces the student to the Interviewer.
  • After the interview of one student is completed, that student goes outside and the next person is called in.
  • The process continues until everyone is interviewed.
  • All of the students come back into the classroom and the class is prompted to give the students applause for their performance.
  • The instructor gives each student a card with a big number on it: 1, 2, to identify the student.
  • The group of students are told to wait outside and the rest of the class is given a piece of paper or note card and instructed to write down their choice as to who should get the job.
  • The Interviewer is allowed two votes (the reward for the hard work done.)
  • The teacher writes the totals on the board with the help of a trustworthy student and also to verify and to validate the class' true vote.
  • All the students waiting outside are told to come in and the job winner is announced.
  • Discuss why X student was more competitive than the others.
